Diamond Clarity
When someone speaks of diamond clarity, they are referring to how pure and blemish-free a diamond is. The less imperfections a diamond has, the more it is worth. Even man-made diamonds are known to have certain imperfections.
If there is something wrong with the surface of the diamond, such as a nick or scratch, it is referred to as a blemish. If something is on the inside of a diamond, such as a crack or particle of something else, it is called an inclusion. These kinds of things determine what level of diamond clarity a gem is awarded. Most diamonds that are bought have some sort of imperfection in them, but it cannot be seen with the naked eye.
In all reality, only a small percentage of diamonds that are mined are nice enough to be used for jewelry. Just a fraction of these gen-quality ones can be considered to be “flawless.” These are extremely expensive and are sometimes referred to as “museum quality” to illustrate their rarity. When shopping for diamonds, you will probably be shown a diamond clarity chart, and be shown where certain diamonds rank on it.
