If you are looking to create a completely customized piece of diamond jewelry, loose diamonds are the way to go. If they are loose, you can pick exactly the one you want, taking size and clarity into account. Then you can choose a mount for it.

Rings are probably the most common piece of jewelry that loose diamonds are chosen for. But necklaces and pendants are also commonly mounted with a specially chosen diamond. If you are getting a very large diamond, you will probably want to look into diamonds that are not mounted. If you are going to spend the money on a very expensive diamond, you will probably want to hand pick it.
